When your spouse doesn’t dictate every aspect of your life, making every decision a ‘victory’.

You would appreciate this. We were out for dinner (grandpa minding the kids at home) and a couple of guys in full gear were at the bar after a day’s ride. Conveniently, we were randomly talking about future vehicle plans. My wife has the minivan she wanted, I need to sell a couple of cars and downsize to pay for it. I casually worked in how much I’d like a bike. I had one years ago, that I bought from her old boss, so not entirely a surprise. Anyway, I explain how efficient it can be, how my easy commute isn’t really a safety concern for a concientious rider, and then...

Wife: Maybe you could have just the truck and a bike?

Me: (Angels sing from on high) YES. I CAN HAVE A TRUCK AND A MOTORCYCLE. I PROMISE... I WILL NEVER DIE.

I’ve always wanted a DRZ400 because it could be a good commuter/weekend trail bike and we have fun trails around here, but my 37 year old back is thinking a V-Strom would be a better all-rounder.

I wouldnt get a V strom. while its not a bad bike by anymeans, its old and outdated now.

if you want that style, id get a honda CB500X. decent for highway, cheap to run, there are off-roadie parts to it, and it can come with abs (easier to sell to the wife) that is switchable for dirt shenanigans

Someday, young Padawan, you will have the same experience with someone you are not related to.

Please light your tires on fire and come home late for the rest of us, then. Bikes are a concern when there are little kids involved.

Well, congrats on that then. You should probably teach her how to ride as well.

What bike are you going to get?

I only think of the V-Strom because a good friend of mine tours the shit out of his and loves it, and I’ve ridden an SV650S and liked it (of course). I’m not in the new bike market. Totally willing to consider Hondas though, no issue there. We’ll see if this actually comes to fruition, but I sure hope so. Gotta sell those cars and get my permit first.

I’m not sure she’d take to it, but that would be amazing.

Some other stuff would need to fall into place first, but I like the idea of a dual-sport/touring style bike, because I don’t have a hard commute and have fun trails & dirt roads nearby. DRZ400, V-Strom, PeterSV suggested a Honda CB500X, something along those lines.

CBR is also ~150lbs lighter then the wee-strom.

I’ve ridden a CBR 600F4i, honestly scared the shit out of me in 3rd gear. When i was younger i wanted one bad though. The crotch rocket posture isn’t really my thing, my back is a little fucked up and I’m not going to drop knee.

Well dual sports are the best. They’re the best to learn on, the best to drop, the lightest and the most maneuverable. She should definitely learn how to ride if you do that. Make sure you also check out the WR250R and CRF250L for good dirt oriented bikes, or KTM.

500 has nothing in common with the 600 other then the CBR name. you’ll be fine. it looks like this FFS

I reluctantly, but voluntarily walked away from many of my favorite, unnecessarily risky activities when my wife was pregnant with our first child. Motorcycling was one of them. In each case, something happened to remind me why those things are considered dangerous. A few more years and the kids will be on their own, opening the door for Danger Buck to ride again!

I made it clear prior to marriage... I’m a motorcyclist, getting in the way of that is grounds for divorce. Plus our attorney along with several others, including the guy that married us, where witness to that statement.
